Skoda Howitzer

Tipies. Skoda Howitzer - History

Finnish use: 12 bought from Sweden during Winter War, they arrived December 1939. Finnish Field Artillery used them during Winter War and the first few months of Continuation War. Then they were warehoused until sold back to Sweden year 1944.

This howitzer was Krupp design, which also Bofors and Asea manufactured in Sweden. Swedish military had acquired 56 of these howitzers. Their another user was Bulgaria. The Swedish remained in Swedish use until being declared obsolete in year 1944. As usual the howitzer had box trail (with large hole in middle of it), breech with horizontal sliding-wedge breech block and recoil system with hydraulic buffer and spring recuperator below barrel. As usual it also had wood wheels with steel hoops and friction brakes. However the howitzer didn't have gun shield of any kind. Towing with suitable motor vehicle and towing with horses were both possible, but motorised towing demanded limber designed specially for it to be used with the howitzer.

Finland bought 12 of these howitzers from Sweden during Winter War and they arrived in late December 1939. During Winter War the howitzers were issued to Heavy Artillery Battalion 6, which was sent to battle in February of 1940. They saw action also during the first few months of Continuation War: Heavy Artillery Battalion 4 used them until they were replaced with captured 152 H/09-30 howitzers in October - November 1941. After being replaced 150 H/06 howitzers were warehoused until they were sold back to Sweden early 1944. The howitzer nowadays exhibited in Finnish Artillery Museum was acquired from Sweden in year 1977. As usual with heavy howitzers the ammunition used with these howitzers was separately loaded type. Finnish military used only high-explosive (HE) ammunition with them.

Finnish use: 12 captured in Civil War in year 1918. These howitzers did not see any use with Finnish White Army in Civil War, but Finnish Army did put them in use after it. Field Artillery used all dozen howitzers during Winter War, until 11 were lost 13 th of February 1940. Two of the lost howitzers were re-captured 1941 and one of them was used as a monument in capital of Soviet Carelia.

This howitzer is Krupp design known as 10,5 cm sFH 02 in Germany and known as 15 cm Type 38 howitzer (model 1905 according western chronology) in Japan. During Russo-Japanese War of 1904 - 1905 it became apparent for Japanese Army that they needed new heavy howitzer. Japanese military bought first of these howitzers from Germany in year 1905 and started manufacturing it under license in year 1911. The howitzer remained in Japanese until World War 2 and was also used in Type 4 Ho-Ro self-propelled howitzer. Japanese military officially retired its remaining 15 cm Type 38 howitzers in year 1942. During World War 1 Russian military had shortage of artillery weapons and the Japanese had already developed a better howitzer design for their heavy artillery regiments, so these howitzers were available and Russia bought number of them from Japan. In fact, it is likely, that the model 1914 of Finnish name to this howitzer model may originate from year the Russians bought them.

PICTURE: Another picture of 150 H/14j howitzer. Notice the interesting screw breech, which looks rather different than the ones used in Russian/Soviet artillery pieces. (Photo taken in Museum Militaria). CLICK THUMBNAIL TO SEE LARGER PIC (90 KB).

Structure-wise this howitzer is pretty typical heavy howitzer of its era. It had the usual box trail with hole in middle of it for more elevation, recoil system with hydraulic/spring buffer/recuperator below barrel and wood wheels with steel hoops. It also had interrupted screw breech and a dial sight, but no gun shield. Ammunition was separately loaded type and only HE-ammunition seems to have been used in Finland. Finnish military used HE-projectiles with both TNT and ammonal (ammonium nitrate based high explosive) for filling the shells, these ammunition types were probably Russian origin (since they had been included already to Finnish artillery manuals from year 1925).

PICTURE: Possibly the most photographed individual Finnish Army howitzer during World War 2? This is the 150 H/14j howitzer, which Finnish military used in 1941 to replace Lenin's statue, which was/is on pedestal in main square of Äänislinna / Petroskoi / Petrozavosk city. Due to its location and the city being major transport and supply hub in east Carelia the howitzer got repeately photographed by the Finns during the war. In Finnish Civil War of 1918 Finnish White Army captured 12 of these howitzers. According some sources Finnish Red Guards and Russians had used them against Finnish White Army before capture, but according another source they were captured without battle use either at Huopalahti warehouses of Russian Army or Russian Garrison in Södervik (Suvilahti) - both places are in Helsinki area. Either way White Army did not use them during Civil War. These dozen heavy howitzers might not see much in scale of this day, but considering the weaponry situation of Finnish military before Winter War they were very important - all other heavy howitzer models in Finnish use at that time were even less numerous. Being the only howitzers numerous enough to arm whole Heavy Artillery Battalion (of 12 guns/howitzers) they became main training weaponry for Finnish heavy field artillery before World War 2. In late 1930's four of the howitzers were in training use of Civil Guard (Suojeluskunta) artillery units (of Pietarsaari/Jakobstad and Uuskaarlepyy/Nykarleby Civil Guards), while eight howitzers remained in use of Heavy Artillery Regiment (principal heavy artillery training unit for Finnish Army at that time). The training use took its toll - ammunition for these howitzers was in short supply already before Winter War. In mobilisation for Winter War all 12 howitzers were issued to Heavy Artillery Battalion 2, which supported Finnish troops in vitally important Summa sector of Mannerheim-line. Because of their short range the howitzers they had to be close to frontline. 13 th of February 1940 Soviets succeeded breaching Finnish defences in Lähde sector of Summa in Carelian Isthmus, due to breakdown in communications Heavy Artillery Battalion 2 did not receive warning about the breach time. So the Soviet tanks roared into artillery positions of Heavy Artillery Battalion 2 without alarm. Surprised howitzer crews had no change of fighting back and 11 of these horse-towed howitzers were lost in matter of minutes. Only one 150 H/14j howitzer survived in Finnish hands that day - it had been under repair in Viipuri/Wiborg the day when the others were lost. When Continuation War started and Finnish troops took back the lost areas in Carelian Isthmus two of the 150 H/14j lost in Summa were recaptured in Perkjärvi, where the Soviets had stored them after Winter War. Three howitzers were still too little for reintroducing the howitzer model for any real use, but one of the recaptured howitzers got a prestigious job. The Finns set it on pedestal to replace statue of Lenin centre of Äänislinna / Petroskoi / Petrozavosk city. Once the Soviets recaptured the city in 1944 they in their own turn replaced the howitzer with Lenin statue. The remaining two howitzers did see any use after World War 2 either. The only howitzer that avoided capture in February of 1940 is nowadays in Finnish Artillery Museum.

Does this fit into a tech tree branch or can we expect it to be a premium?

Was the 10.5 cm gun able to use the same shells as the old FeFH 18? If so, could we expect the ingame version to have access to AP shells too?

Yes, Hogg states it could use the same shells, only LEFH 43 could use stronger charges as well.

so… AP round with 75-80 mm pen, could be usefull.

A bit higher actually, LEFH 18 AP is slightly underestimated in WOT (we get 500m penetration at 100m)

500m pen at 100m? Is there a typo maybe? :D

Maybe just a slight grammar malfunction.
mm at 500 m” is probably the correct way to write it.

So if we get 100 mm pen with 430 m/s velocity we could expect 130-140 with 610?

not mm, meter. we get 500 meter pen, at 100 meters ingame, because of game structure. we shoot at far closer distances than they did in real life.

Skoda stronk manufakturer.

My family has a skoda fabia, weri cheap vehicle alsu little n cute, liek mi :).

My family has been driving Škoda cars for 15 years now… good, cheap(compared to other manufacturers) and very well made cars.

Mind you the Skoda car manufacturer didn’t actually make any tanks.

There are two Škoda manufacturers in Czech republic.

Skoda Auto has HQ in Mlada Boleslav – they are the car manufacturers, formerly known as Laurin & Klement. During WWII they did mostly stuff like trucks, jeeps, some weapon parts, maybe engines for other stuff.

Then there is Skoda company in Plzen, which specializes in heavy machinery – they are the ones who made the tanks and guns, amoungst various other things.

Basically, Laurin & Klement got merged with Škoda Works because economical crisis and stuff at some point between the wars and later they split again as Škoda Auto.

We had a Skoda fabia VRS: small, economical… and could outrun most BMW and mercs at the stoplights. My father still regrets selling it.

We got a new Rapid Škoda now :) Purrs like a kitten :)

We pey 25000 SEK for skoda fabia 2007, only 5000 miles on motor, very good car for the money.

Wargaming could make a whole Skoda tonk tree. So much kewl stuff Skoda made/planned. :D

Really SS, what country are you from?

Czech…I have bad experiance with czech people in wota….

Well, I am Czech too. Excuse those worse and rude of us and believe it’s not all of us 3

Just be glad you’re not American. Most of us defy the stereotype, but the vocal minority is so extremely vocal that no matter what we say or do we’ll never live down our bad reputation abroad.

The actual state of Murikkka casts doubts on your claim. And yeah, having elected “Mr. Diplomacy” Shrubbery for President is gonna be a major black mark for at least a generation.

Skoda 100mm houfnice vz. 30

In 1930, the Czech Army moved on adoption of two new artillery pieces to fulfill the field gun and howitzer battlefield roles. The former became the "76.5mm kanon vz 30" while the latter became the "100mm houfnice vz 30". These guns were both based on an earlier design which saw export to Romania and Yugoslavia during 1928. Skoda Works of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia was responsible for the design, development, and production of these artillery systems.

The primary feature of these products was their 80-degree elevation action which originally intended the guns for the anti-aircraft role as well as general field support. When the anti-aircraft function proved limiting, the guns were marketed on more traditional qualities - particularly the howitzer model as it could make for an effective mountain warfare artillery solution. Compared with the original 100mm houfnice vz 28 product, the 100mm houfnice vz 30 was give new rubber-tired road wheels when taken on the Czech Army.

Despite their availability, the guns never fired a shot in anger during the German takeover of Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s. The Skoda Works facility now fell under the control of the Germans to which existing stocks of the guns, and any future units, components, and ammunition, would be made available solely to the German Army. In German Army service, the 100mm houfnice vz 30 was designated as the 10cm leFH 30(t) to mark their Czech origins. They went on to prove themselves highly effective and efficient battlefield pieces and saw service through to the end of the war in 1945.

SKODA M.1917 HEAVY HOWITZER (Takom)

This is the M.1917 Heavy Howitzer designed and built by Skoda Works for the Austro-Hungarian empire's armies in World War 1. Design began in 1909 and the final version of the gun (see here as belonging to Czechoslovakia) was produced in 1917 but never saw actual combat service in that war.
The first eight were built for coastal defence and attack of battleships. They were quickly transferred to heavy siege duty on the eastern fronts. The last gun (seen here) became the largest artillery piece of the new Czechoslovakian Army. The version here is how the gun would have looked in 1919 right after the Great War. As a footnote of history the gun was eventually acquired by the Nazis after the takeover of Czechoslovakia, and used against the Maginot Line in France, and at the siege of Sevastapol USSR. Strangely the box art on the kit shows two gun at Sevastapol, but only one existed.

The kit is by Takom (kit #2018) is in 1:35 scale, and is larger than most tank kits. Colours are Tamiya spray cans and Vallejo acrylic airbrush paints and powders.

This is a fantastic kit with well thought out engineering. The plastic barrel is even rifled! The only problem is the pivot point for the gun body on the cradle/carriage - these are molded as a single part on each side, but need to be separate so the whole cradle can be assembled and painted without the gun in place. I cut them off to do this.

The Army&rsquos New Howitzer Just Hit a Target 43 Miles Away. On the Nose.

The U.S. Army has dramatically increased the range of its howitzer guns, setting a new distance record.

In a new test, the Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) gun fired a precision-guided shell to a range of 43 miles, or enough to shell Washington D.C. from Baltimore. The Army says the gun now holds the world record for precision strikes . but a new Russian howitzer could soon challenge that.

The Army conducted the test, according to Defense News , at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, firing an M109A7 Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) howitzer fitted with a longer, 58-caliber gun. (In field artillery, &ldquocaliber&rdquo refers to the length of the gun barrel and not the diameter of the bore. The 155-millimeter diameter of the barrel is multiplied by 58 to determine the overall length of the barrel, or 29.49 feet.) A longer barrel allows expanding gases triggered by the shell powder to act upon the projectile for a greater period of time, increasing velocity.

The other half of ERCA is a new &ldquosupercharged&rdquo propellant formulation designed to increase pressure inside the barrel.

The two new technologies combined to allow the Army to fire a GPS-guided &ldquoExcalibur&rdquo artillery round to a total of 43 miles. The ERCA test involved firing three rounds one missed due to high winds, and the second missed due to a hardware failure. The third, however, hit the target.

ERCA nearly doubles the range of existing Army howitzers. According to the Army, the existing M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer can send Excalibur rounds to 39.3 kilometers (24.4 miles), which ERCA can now lob to 43 miles.

The Coolest Military Toys

Excalibur is a Raytheon-developed shell with jam-resistant GPS, guidance fins, and a unitary high explosive warhead. First fielded in the early 2010s, new versions of Excalibur can strike a target within 2 meters.

ERCA may already have a challenger: the Russian 2S35 &ldquoKoalitsiya&rdquo (&ldquoCoalition&rdquo) 152-millimeter self-propelled howitzer. Similar to the M109A7, the 2S35 is reported to have a range between 40 and 80 kilometers.

The high end of that estimate would make it a longer range weapon than ERCA, though it&rsquos not clear if that range involves the use of precision-guided shells.

In March 2020, the Russian newspaper Izvestia reported the country was developing a new rocket artillery shell that would give the 2S35 and the older 2S19 howitzer a range greater than 100 kilometers.

Howitzer at the Colorado State Capitol

The English word howitzer originates ultimately from the Czech word houfnice. Ώ] ΐ] Α] Czech houfnice is derived, through the addition of the suffix -nice, from the word houf, "crowd", suggesting the cannon's use against massed enemies, Β] Γ] and houf is in turn a borrowing from the Middle High German word Hūfe of Houfe (modern German Haufen), meaning "heap," akin to Dutch hoop as in verloren hoop ("lost troop," entering English through a folk-etymological back-formation as "forlorn hope"). Haufen, sometimes in the compound Gewalthaufen, also designated a pike square formation in German. [ aanhaling nodig ] In the Hussite Wars of the 1420s and 1430s, the Czechs used short barreled houfnice cannons Δ] to fire at short distances into such crowds of infantry, or into charging heavy cavalry, to make horses shy away. Ε] The word was rendered into German as aufeniz in the earliest attested use in a document dating from 1440 later German renderings include Haussnitz and, eventually Haubitze, from which derive the Scandinavian haubits, Finnish haupitsi, Polish haubica, Russian gaubitsa, Italian obice, Spanish obús, Portuguese obus, French obusier and the Dutch word houwitzer, which led to the English word howitzer .

Since the First World War, the word howitzer has been increasingly used to describe artillery pieces that, strictly speaking, belong to the category of gun-howitzer - relatively long barrels and high muzzle velocity combined with multiple propelling charges and high maximum elevation. This is particularly true in the armed forces of the United States, where gun-howitzers have been officially described as "howitzers" for more than sixty years. Because of this practice, the word "howitzer" is used in some armies as a generic term for any kind of artillery piece that is designed to attack targets using indirect fire. Thus, artillery pieces that bear little resemblance to howitzers of earlier eras are now described as howitzers, although the British call them guns. Most other armies in the world still reserve the word howitzer for guns with barrel length 15 to 25 times its caliber, longer-barreled guns being cannons.

The British had a further method of nomenclature that they adopted in the 19th century. Guns were categorized by projectile weight in pounds while howitzers were categorized by caliber in inches. This system broke down in the 1930s with the introduction of gun-howitzers.

Current U.S. Military doctrine defines howitzers as any cannon artillery capable of high-angle (45' to 90' elevation) and low angle (45' to 0' elevation) guns and are defined as only capable of low-angle fire and mortars only capable of high-angle fire.

You've only scratched the surface of Skoda family history.

Between 1945 and 2004, in the United States, Skoda life expectancy was at its lowest point in 1957, and highest in 1998. The average life expectancy for Skoda in 1945 was 38, and 87 in 2004.

An unusually short lifespan might indicate that your Skoda ancestors lived in harsh conditions. A short lifespan might also indicate health problems that were once prevalent in your family.
